Anna Wise - Precious Possession

One of the musicians lucky enough to be included on Kendrick Lamar’s last two albums, Wise has dropped two fantastic singles to open 2016.  “Precious Possession” rides a sultry neo-soul vibe as she lilts her way through an after-dark jam that moves back and forth between the self-aware self-loathing that comes from knowing that she’s playing into and along with the absurd objectification projected onto women by men and the fuck-it, let’s-do-this feeling that comes from, you know, needs.  At times it’s hard to tell if she’s being sarcastic or just knowingly and with resignation playing into weird gender-based expectations when she sings lines like “I wanna be your princess.  I am your precious possession. I am so delicate, I need your protection.”  Probably both.  It’s fucked up, as it’s uncomfortable to hear someone walk through the ridiculous and patronizing charade of playing into male expectations and fantasy all while being completely aware of exactly how demeaning that is.  That said, unless you’re really honing in on the lyrics, you’re likely to think it’s just another sexy, late-night jam.  That substance mixed with undeniable listenability is what makes Lamar so great, and it’s apparently a trait he shares with his two-time collaborator.
