Ariana Grande has made quite the jump from her Teen Nick days. Sam and Cat had a following that stretched far beyond its tween target demographic, and a lot of that was largely due to the magnetic charm of Ms. Grande. With her music career, she used that charm to get the most out of a middling debut, whose non-excellence wasn’t due to her performances, which were universally great. Even then, she was able to wring bubble-gummy goodness out of songs like “Piano” that would have been forgettable at best in less capable hands. From there, though, shit got real, and she’s been on the up and up ever since. While “Problem” may have been her biggest breakthrough hit,“Break Free” was maybe her bigger moment. She was finally getting utilize those pipes for what feels like her most perfect fit: four-on-the-floor dance tracks. She explores the dancefloor a little further on her new house jam, “Be Alright”. It takes a powerful voice attached to a person with taste and a knack for ad-libbing to make the most of what’s essentially a wordless chorus. Just as she did with the spoken-word chorus of“Problem”, Grande absolutely crushes it. Get it, Ari.
